PaperBox FAQs

What is a printable escape room?

A printable escape room is a game you download as a PDF and play using printed clues, puzzles, and challenges. Players work together to solve riddles, crack codes, and uncover the final solution — just like in a real escape room, but at home or school. All you need is a printer, household items like scissors and tape, and a sense of adventure.

Are your escape rooms suitable for classroom use?

Yes — PaperBox escape rooms are used by teachers across UK primary and secondary schools as KS2 and KS3 enrichment activities, golden time rewards, and end-of-term games. Each educational kit comes with a free Reading Comprehension pack aligned to the themes of the story, making them easy to tie into English curriculum work. They require minimal prep and can be run with a full class by splitting into competing teams.

Who is this for?

👩‍🏫 For Teachers: Ready-made classroom escape rooms with little prep. Use as a lesson starter, end-of-term or golden time reward, or cross-curricular activity. Pairs with the free reading comprehension pack included in every download.

🏠 For Homeschoolers: Structured, curriculum-adjacent learning that feels like play. Cover literacy, logic, history, and problem-solving in a single session.

👨‍👩‍👧 For Parents: The perfect answer to 'I'm bored' that doesn't involve a screen. Hands-on, imaginative, and actually fun for the whole family.

How does it work after I purchase?

Once you purchase a printable escape room from PaperBox, you'll receive the downloadable PDF immediately. From there you can print using your home printer or select your preferred printing service.

How long does an escape room take?

Here at PaperBox, we dislike the dreaded time limit. Unlike real-life escape rooms, printable escape rooms can be completed in your own time, at your own pace! If you want to add a time limit or competition element, you can!

How many can play?

Games work with a range of group sizes

  • Solo player? - Drop the device and start flexing those little grey cells.
  • A couple? What could make a better date than working together (or declaring yourselves sworn enemies) to solve the puzzles and escape the game in the nick of time.
  • Small group? Whether you’re 11 or 77, playing a printable escape room in your own comfy home is like playing Monopoly - super fun until someone tries to cheat.
  •  Larger group? Split into teams! Challenge yourselves and set up a prize for the quickest team to solve the puzzles and escape with their sanity intact.

How do you print a print-and-play escape room?

Printable Escape Rooms are designed for quick and easy printing at home.

1. Download Your Escape Room File

  • Open the PDF file you received after purchase.
  • Save it somewhere easy to access (Desktop, Downloads, or a dedicated 'Escape Rooms' folder).

2. Choose Your Paper

Most escape rooms print perfectly on:

  • A4 or Letter size
  • Standard printer paper (80–100gsm)

3. Check Your Printer Settings

Before printing, set:

  • Scale: 100% (not 'fit to page' unless the file requests it)
  • Colour mode: Colour
  • Double-sided printing: OFF
  • Print quality: Standard or High for best clarity
  • Most escape rooms look best on normal quality, so no need to use ink-heavy settings.

 4. Print Only What You Need

Escape rooms include:

  • instruction pages
  • puzzle sheets
  • answer sheets
  • hint pages
  • decorative extras

You can print:

  • everything, or
  • just the puzzle components, saving ink and paper
  • This is especially useful if you want to reuse the activity.

Do I have to print in colour?

Yes. This is our only true rule. Many clues are based around colour, so printing in black and white might mean you never escape! Uh oh.

What age range are printable escape rooms for?

PaperBox escape rooms are differentiated in skill level and are designed for all ages from 7+

You'll find our escape rooms arranged to suit ages 7-11, 11+, and adults. They can also be filtered as easy, medium, and hard.

Can I use props and locks to enhance the experience?

Absolutely! Adding extra layers of complexity always adds that extra special touch. You can add extra theming, such as props and displays to immerse players in the game.

Most of the games are designed to be fully self-contained and playable immediately, but if you would like to DIY numerical codes or word codes into locks and cryptexes that you have available, go for it!

If I set up the game, can I still play?

Yes! The host can still play along with the game after setting up. Each escape room is designed so that the puzzle answers are unclear until completion. (As long as you don’t sneak a look at the answer pages.) So have fun!

How do printable escape rooms support learning?

Printable escape rooms support curriculum learning by turning academic content into engaging, puzzle-based challenges that reinforce key concepts and promote higher-order thinking. They're interactive, memorable, and aligned with classroom goals.

Printable escape rooms and themed games encourage collaboration, communication, and persistence while making lessons more motivating through gamification. Because they are easy to differentiate and require little prep, teachers can use them to review or assess understanding across subjects, or simply as a golden time reward.

Refunds aren’t available on digital items, what if I don’t enjoy the game?
